GetGlue

So I just joined “GetGlue”. Do I know what it is? Not really, no. I saw in my Facebook feed that someone had just received a sticker on it and it intrigued me. I thought well I like stickers, turns out I have to check in to things to get them, which is something else that with the use of four square and facebook I have learnt I like to do. Stickers are a familiar object from our childhood and still in adult life make appearances. They are homely.

Anyway the attraction to this application that I don’t understand has got me thinking about a conversation I was having at lunch today. I was asked to explain what value social networking has for those people that like to let us know they are in Tesco buying a pack of dog food and for the people who read about it. I am someone who would like to say I am above this, but to be honest there are definitely times in my life when I feel it is important for the world to know that I am cold in the freezer isle and that there are no bagels left. These kind of posts make people feel important whilst taking part in the mundane experiences of everyday life. It is a key role in releasing the dullness and sharing it with others who feel your pain, and turning it into a pleasant event that people of like minds [excuse the pun] can “LIKE”.

In these times of the human/ cyborg evolution we are babies still. We are small fish in a big pond looking for some kind of familiarity. Social networking platforms are the ground of our virtual home. A place for our new cybotic bodies to shelter and blossom; a coffee house if you will. You ask what value these post have? What purpose do they serve? What does anyone gain from them? Not everything that comes from the mouths of the physical body is a profound statement that will have some devastating effect on the movements of a life so why should every statement made online have to carry the weight of such a purpose? Because of the time it takes out of “the real world”? The world where people are sitting in living rooms watching eggheads and the like? Is that the real world? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t be any means believe that sitting in front of the computer mindlessly playing games or planting crops is in any way the real world either.

A balance needs to be understood. The “real world” is taking place in multiple dimensions at this time. We can be as connected to someone on the other side of the world in a different time zone as we can to someone physically standing next to us. That is BIG, that is bending spacetime, that is beautiful. We are all finding our footing in this new land as it becomes more and more accessible but if embraced rather than feared the 8-bit sky could be our limit! Some of these so called valueless posts are really just the new kids creating something familiar in an untouched wilderness in the hope of finding a home.

I hope you enjoy reading my rant and I apologise now for any vagueness, I am just beginning to reopen my mind into the world of theorising and it is still a bit raw.
